A great quote by Heraclitus relates directly to construction: “The only thing that is constant is change”. Change happens every day on a construction site and the best laid plans for an operation or a day will most likely be impacted by change. When change occurs in construction – whether it is an unexpected delivery or a change in weather – the likelihood of injuries occurring increases.

One of the best tools to combat safety risks associated with a change is to bring the team together to analyze the impact. This provides opportunities for the team to express their concerns and develop a revised plan to mitigate the hazards associated with a changed condition. Our teams utilize the PC SAFE Book (Stop, Assess the hazard, Form a plan, Execute the plan), a pocket-sized notebook that helps identify and mitigate these hazards to ensure people go home safe every day. This simple tool reinforces the importance of reevaluating work tasks as conditions change and promotes a team-based safety culture.

A great day on a construction site is when everyone returns home safe to their families, all while meeting or exceeding production goals. To make this happen, our teams are empowered to speak up and contribute to the solution. It takes more than one voice to have true impact.

We are excited to again be part of Construction Safety Week. This is a great time for our industry to continue to reinforce the importance of safety on our construction sites. We have great events planned for the week and our project teams are looking forward to learning and sharing while continuing to carry this commitment to safety forward every day.

One of the things I enjoy most about my work is mentoring students as they find their way along a career path in construction. That is one of the reasons why I am so involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Construction Institute (CI), a program designed to help bring youth into the civil engineering industry.

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of joining 36 students from across the country at the CI Student Days event in Charleston, South Carolina. The time spent together was truly invaluable, with a focus on learning opportunities, industry presentations, networking opportunities and panel discussions. As the current CI Vice President, I presented about the many possible career paths in civil engineering.

This year the students were also given the unique opportunity to tour the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River that connects downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. This bridge illustrates engineering at its finest and provided insight into what goes into such an extensive project.

Just being with this group of top engineering students was enough to make me feel confident in the bright future of our industry.

Ryan’s work with CI’s Young Professionals Group, which he co-founded, has grown to a national effort to attract youth interest and participation in construction. The group’s Student Days Event brings together top engineering students from across the country to participate in real-life construction challenges wile meeting with potential employers who are seeking new talent. Hotel EntryThe new Mirbeau Inn & Spa Rhinebeck opened to much fanfare on Friday with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony. The PC Construction team was on hand to participate in the celebration after 19 months of construction.

The 76,000-square-foot, five story resort is situated in the heart of Rhinebeck Village on nearly three acres surrounded by forests, offering a secluded setting easily accessible from New York City and Albany. Reminiscent of an old-world Parisian Hotel, the resort hosts 50 guest room suites, each with their own fireplace, mini-spa bathrooms and upscale accommodations. The 12,000-square-foot spa wing offers 14 treatment rooms, each with a fireplace, and a central resting room with water feature.

Mirbeau’s award-winning French-inspired restaurant, Willow, seats 50 in the restaurant and 22 in the lounge and features Charlie Palmer’s exquisite culinary talent.

Topping off the amenities is an outdoor Aqua Terrace with Jucuzzi-style hot spa pool, fireplace and food service, as well as 3,000-square-feet of meeting and conference spaces.

With construction wrapped up and rooms booking quickly, the resort will undeniably be an instrumental part of Rhinebeck Village – and the PC Construction team is proud to have played a part in bringing this vision to reality.

Last night, PC Construction proudly accepted a Best Builders Award for the Ben & Jerry’s Project Extra Chunk expansion in St. Albans, Vermont. The award was presented by the Associated General Contractors of Vermont for outstanding quality of work and effort in the Innovative Specialty Construction category. The project has also been selected as an Engineering News-Record Award of Merit honoree and will be formally recognized at a ceremony on December 12.

The 40,000-square-foot addition includes a new warehouse, packing hall with hardening tunnel, refrigeration building, sugar tank/CIP building, mix storage extension and an expanded QA/QC laboratory. Work also included renovations to the existing facility, the foundation and utilities for the new “locker room” for office and employee development space, a new wastewater treatment plant to accommodate facility production, and extensive site work.

The project included over 25,000 cubic yards of excavated material, 400 tons of structural steel and 62,000 square feet of metal wall panels. This first major investment made in the 20-year-old building was completed in just 11 months, allowing a 44% increase in pint production at this facility.

Bus StationOn June 9, the Green Mountain Transit Downtown Transit Center was recognized with a Grand Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Vermont at their annual Engineering Excellence Award Gala.

The new Downtown Transit Center was completed in 2016 and includes a 10,250-square-foot facility with covered canopy space to accommodate 10 buses. The climate-controlled building with indoor waiting area, ticket booth and restrooms replaced an existing terminal to support growing ridership and offer amenities to improve overall customer experience. The facility also caters to drivers with a secure break room with kitchen, quiet room and restrooms for between-shift downtime. The new center offers a safe and convenient central hub and attractive gateway to the transit system for the City of Burlington and surrounding municipalities.

PC is proud to have partnered with Green Mountain Transit, VHB and TruexCullins on this important community project. Congratulations to the entire team involved in the planning, design and construction of this exceptional facility!

Yesterday was a big day for the City of Burlington as a Green Mountain Transit bus literally drove through the ribbon to officially open the new Downtown Transit Center in Vermont. PC Construction began construction of the facility last May.

This new 10,250-square-foot facility will improve the public transportation experience by providing an enclosed ticket building, a bus tracking system allowing riders to follow bus travel in real time, a climate-controlled indoor waiting area and rest rooms. A large canopy extends the entire block, accommodating 10 buses and providing passengers with exterior shelter from weather conditions with windscreens and heaters. Drivers will also reap the benefits of the new facility with a secure break room that includes a kitchen, quiet space and rest rooms for between-shift accommodations.

The new transit center eliminates the need for buses to cross the heavily-populated Church Street crossing, allowing for faster, more accurate travel times. It also eliminates disturbance to the busy Cherry Street traffic and parking garage entrances.

I am excited that this day is finally here for Burlington – this project will certainly have a long-lasting impact on the community.

Earlier this month I attended the American Society of Civil Engineers Construction Institute Summit in Orlando, Florida. The two days featured cutting edge innovations in construction and provided ample learning opportunities geared around enhancing construction project success.

During the summit, I had the great pleasure of joining four other professionals to present on “The Importance of Developing the Next Generation of Leaders Within Your Company.” Each of the presenters represented a different generation and provided a dynamic way of learning about the expectations and desires of each generation relative to training, mentoring, career development, performance reviews and feedback, networking, workforce management, and work-life balance. The audience was engaged and participative, allowing for a greater learning opportunity by all.

It was clear throughout the course of the presentation that everyone agreed that mentorship and communication play a vital role in bridging the gap between the generations.

CI is an outstanding organization. Want to get involved or learn more? Click here.
