Since the Vermont Chapter was only recently chartered in December 2023, this is the first forum we鈥檝e attended and I was fortunate to enjoy the event with our chapter president, Nicole Benton.

The welcome from all of the women in attendance was truly remarkable. NAWIC was founded to create a supportive community where women in construction can educate, develop, connect and thrive, and the women in this organization embody that mission to the fullest. Our time together was spent hearing from amazing keynote speakers such as Dr. Linda Singh, retired Major General, and NAWIC鈥檚 own Jenn Dewees, President of the Maryland Center for Construction Education & Innovation. We learned more about the barriers that women face in the construction industry and discussed lessons learned and strategies for supporting and advancing the incredible women with whom we work.

On top of all of that, we were able to spend time connecting with one another, making lasting relationships, and allowing space to discuss how, collectively, we can not only make construction a better place for women, but a better place for all genders.

Units feature in-residence elevators, spacious balconies, sweeping floor-to-ceiling windows, and best-in-class materials and finishes. Rounding out the residences is a private pool, below-grade parking, locker rooms and ski storage.

Completed last year, PC鈥檚 team, in collaboration with more than 400 trade partner workers, developed an unconventional phased-delivery approach that challenged construction logistics and methods, a true collaborative effort that led to outstanding project success.

This project was so incredibly special for me. I had a great team 鈥?from the owner whom we have worked with over the past 15 years to the PC project management staff, our self-perform craftworkers, and over 400 trade partner workers. We had our fair share of challenges, but we collaboratively developed an unconventional phased-delivery approach that challenged construction logistics and methods to successfully complete the project 鈥?and we did it all with zero safety incidents and a 0.0 incident rate! To have this project recognized now with three prestigious industry awards is just a feather in our cap!

PC Construction recently held their Employee Leadership Conference 鈥?a gathering of the company鈥檚 leadership group 鈥?in Burlington, VT. It has been 30 months since the last conference and the sheer volume of employee owners in the room was a testament to the growth PC has experienced during that time.

I am a member of PC Construction鈥檚 Leadership Development Program (LDP), a program focused on providing on-the-job experiences related to field, office engineering, scheduling, and estimating. Many of the company鈥檚 leaders got their start in this very program. So it was exciting when we were offered the opportunity to send two members of our LDP group to attend the conference and report back our experiences. As office engineers early in our careers, it was an intimidating and experienced group to spend a few days with but it was such an amazing opportunity.

Over the course of the conference topics of discussion included Value Added Safety, Lean Construction, Feedback and Coaching for Successful Development, and Trust. Through workshops and presentations, we learned and discussed what each of these mean to us as individuals and what they mean to PC Construction as a company.

PC Construction is trending in a very positive direction for growth and learning. The purpose of the conference, as well as the LDP and all our other programs, is to create an atmosphere for learning and the tools to succeed for all of our employee owners so we can thrive as individuals and a company. This is true and evident in that these topics and discussions did not end when it was time to go home on Saturday. These are the building blocks that everyone has taken back to their everyday work in an effort to make PC Construction a company where we all thrive, personally, professionally and financially.
