Joe PicoraroAfter over 46 years at PC Construction, I am excited to announce I will begin the next chapter in January – retirement!

My journey dates back to May 1978. I had just graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Vermont and applied to a family-owned firm with three brothers at the helm. That one decision sealed my fate, connecting me to a group of dedicated construction professionals who helped me become what I am today.

My formative years were spent with our estimating department – the foundation of all projects and a key ingredient of project success. After graduating from a comprehensive engineer-in-training program, my journey would take me into the field and a plethora of markets, locations and project teams. I always challenged myself to evaluate my personal and professional path every five years – and every time, I came to the same conclusion. And the proof is a long, successful career with a great company.

The ultimate factor in my success over the years is, of course, the people in this great business. The relationships with my fellow employee owners, our incredible customers and project partners have truly made all the difference. My sincerest thank you to all of you.

I would be remiss if I did not include my family in this message. They supported my career in every way and were instrumental in creating a home that allowed me to thrive at PC. My wife and children are a part of every project I was involved with – and my love and thanks are with them. I’m so excited that they – and my eight grandchildren – will have my undivided attention in the years ahead!

Moving forward, all of our customers and partners in the Seacoast region will have the absolute pleasure of collaborating with Lisa Beeler, the newest addition to PC’s business development team. She is incredibly talented and exudes so much excitement for our industry, the projects, and relationships. Please give her a warm welcome!

Food sculptureThornton Tomasetti’s Portland, Maine office recently hosted a mid-winter social to raise awareness about climate change and its effect on the future of winter recreation. The event showcased a Charcuterie Chalet Challenge which several local firms jumping in to create unique edible architecture, with all funds raised benefiting Protect Our Winters. Always looking for opportunities to catch up with industry partners, PC joined in for the fun.

Using a variety of charcuterie delectables, a look-alike Saddleback Ski Area Mid-Mountain Lodge was created and modeled after the real-life project currently under construction by the PC team near Rangeley, Maine. The final charcuterie masterpiece showcased distinct architectural and structural features that resemble the plan for the final facility. Midway through the event, and after a detailed and thoughtful overview of each edible submission, the Mid-Mountain Lodge was deemed the winner!

Aside from the great looking (and tasting) charcuterie art, the event was a great reminder of how we can all help make a difference.

The Maine Chapter of the Associated General Contractors held their Annual Safety Award Recognition banquet event last week at the University of Maine in Orono. Over one hundred attendees representing local contractors and subcontractors attended the event to honor and recognize firms that have achieved exceptional safety results. PC is excited to be among this year’s honorees, with a Safety Program Award in the Building Division. This award recognizes our 2021 safety performance and results.

Following the presentation of the awards, AGC Maine’s Executive Director Kelly Flagg praised the firms receiving awards and recognized how effective safety leadership has an integral and vital role in enhancing the safety culture within an organization.

PC’s fundamental goal is to send every PC employee owner and trade partner home safely every day. That means all of us – from our skilled craft to our project leadership – have the responsibility to manage safety on our jobsites. We are proud of our safety achievements and are appreciative of this recognition.

Last week PC was recognized by the Associated General Contractors of Maine for our work on the Brunswick Health Care Center. The project, for Martin’s Point Health Care, consolidated Brunswick’s two existing aging clinics at this new 54,000-square-foot facility.

The new two-story clinic includes 63 exam rooms and 8 procedure rooms, space for x-ray, ultrasound and mammography, patient waiting areas, provider and staff spaces, a physical therapy gym, and a testing laboratory. The facility was designed with future growth in mind. The structural steel and concrete roof deck can accommodate an additional 20,000 square feet of space on the second level without structural modifications.

With the COVID-19 pandemic forever changing the way all health care facilities operate, innovative design enhancements were made during the construction phase without significantly impacting the construction schedule. A separate entrance was built to isolate potentially infectious patients and a suite of rooms were designed to be easily isolated from the rest of the facility by simply constructing temporary walls. In addition, several exam rooms were turned into negative air suites by adding dedicated exhaust fans with high-efficiency filters to further mitigate the spread of airborne pathogens.

One of the most complicated aspects of the project was the construction of the prefabricated roof trusses. The trusses were large and presented complex installation and safety challenges, not only for the crew erecting them, but also for anyone working nearby. PC decided to assemble the trusses into pods at ground level before hoisting each pod into place to allow for the metal roof decking and plywood substrate to be installed on each assembly prior to setting in place. The truss pods were also erected and set into their final resting place on weekends to eliminate impacts to activities on or around the site. This decision was the safest installation option and also resulted in time and cost efficiencies.

The project, with core partners SMRT and Sebago Technics, was completed in August 2021, on time and under budget.

Engineering, construction and tech students starting careers in construction remains critical to the continued success of the industry, especially with an aging workforce and the need for young up-and-coming leaders. PC supports many organizations and academic facilities working to advance construction careers. I happen to be involved with the Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC), a group of industry leaders that provide support, guidance, and connection for students and faculty in the Construction Engineering Technology (CET) program at the University of Maine Orono’s Campus. The IAC was formed in the early 1980s and has provided nearly four decades of mentorship, leadership and guidance to countless students as they learn and develop into future construction professionals.

The primary focus of the IAC is to provide industry perspective and advice to the University of Maine’s CET program so that CET faculty and staff can keep the curriculum updated and consistent with current industry practices. These actions help prepare students for their professional careers.

PC has been actively involved with the IAC for over twenty years. Our teams pitch in as guest lecturers and estimating instructors and have helped facilitate student activities during capstone projects and construction day events. Last year, I led a discussion with students in about the importance of internships, how they can help students determine a specific construction career path, and what students in their second, third and fourth years of study can expect from an internship.

Involvement by industry leaders through the IAC and other organizations is instrumental in assisting students as they mold their passions into career paths and prepare for the future with sound secondary education opportunities.

A recent meeting of the Industrial Advisory Committee.

Last night PC Construction was honored to accept a Build Maine Award from the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Maine for the major renovation and expansion project at three school buildings within Regional School Unit 21.

The $47.2 million project included the rehabilitation and expansion of two elementary schools and the area’s high school. In total, over 147,000 square feet of renovations and nearly 135,000 square feet of additions were completed at the Mildred L. Day School, Kennebunkport Consolidated School, and Kennebunk High School. A defining attribute of this project was the owner’s decision to utilize a construction management model, rather than the typical design-bid-build structure utilized by the majority of Maine school-specific projects. This allowed for unique subcontractor and vendor procurement strategies that provided best cost and value for RSU 21 while creating a collaborative approach to completing this complex project.

By December 2018, all efforts prevailed. The project was completed on time and budget, and nearly 500,000 work hours were expended with zero lost-time injuries. Most importantly, the students, teachers and administration were immersed in modern, durable and energy efficient spaces to match the caliber of their educational initiatives.
