I am excited to kick off this year’s Women in Construction Week celebration! While women have been key contributors in our industry for centuries, we take this time each year to celebrate their accomplishments and build awareness for future generations of women in construction.

More than one million women currently make their living in construction. That’s less than 12 percent of the total construction workforce, which clearly shows that we have a long way to go. At PC, women are an invaluable part of our construction leadership, skilled craft, and dedicated professionals, bringing exciting perspectives and thoughtful insights to their successful work. We are committed to enhancing their opportunities for growth and advancement, while continuously striving to bring new talent to our company.

As we celebrate Women in Construction week, we’ll share perspectives from women who play crucial roles throughout our company and help shine a light on how women contribute to making our industry strong and vibrant. We hope the combined efforts this week inspire young women and demonstrate how fulfilling and rewarding a construction career can be.

To all the women at PC who I have the pleasure of working alongside everyday – thank you! Your talents are invaluable and your contributions make PC better every day. I can’t wait to see what we all accomplish together next.

This week we celebrate the inaugural Construction Inclusion Week. We are proud of our colleagues at Clark Construction, DPR, Gilbane, Mortenson, McCarthy, and Turner Construction who came together in 2020 to create a Time for a Change movement in our industry. One result of their efforts is an entire week when contractors across the world come together to build upon our daily diversity, equity, and inclusion work and bring greater awareness to diversity in our industry.

At PC, we are about 18 months into our reinvigorated DEI mindset, and I have to say I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and the change we continue to make. We’ve asked a lot of hard questions and we’ve challenged practices, polices, and belief systems that have been in place even since our founding years. We have a long way to go – there’s no question about that – but we’ve made tremendous progress to date.

What I am most excited about are the doors this journey has opened. Just in the last month alone, we have made significant progress on two age-old scenarios.

First, we opened the channels of communication across the company, providing PC email and electronic devices to craft employees for the first time in the company’s history. This one action closes the communications gap and ensures all employees – regardless of position or location – have access to the same information at the same time.

We also brought to fruition an equitable benefits package for our craft employees that resulted in more paid time off, additional disability and life insurance benefits, and increased eligibility opportunities. Every person on our team plays a vital role in our success, and they have the right to be rewarded equitably for doing so.

So why did it take so long to make these changes, and so many others? Because that’s the way it always was. We simply didn’t pay attention and didn’t question where, why, and when those decisions originated. It took one person – George Floyd – to bring it all into perspective. And we aren’t turning back.

So, let’s take this week to celebrate how far we’ve come and to continue our efforts to do better and be better every single day.

In June, I made a commitment to spearhead change at PC. We continue to see tremendous unrest in our country with the tragic loss of lives, morality, and the basic commitment to treating everyone fairly and humanely. These issues run so deep. Take a look at some of the greatest motivators of human rights change in our history – Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, Dalai Lama, Ghandi – and the great strides they made in our world, yet here we are struggling with the same challenges every single day.

While these challenges cannot be solved by one person or one company, PC is committed to leveraging our reach across the East Coast to improve our workplaces and the communities in which we work. I will rally our teams to take the steps necessary to ensure PC becomes a truly diverse and inclusive workplace. Together, we are researching, learning, and trying to comprehend where we are to shape our actions and our behaviors to do better and be better.

As an employee-owned company, we commit to:

  • A Diversity and Inclusion Board and six Action Teams dedicated to driving momentum on our efforts.
  • Engaging with minority candidates to add diversity to PC’s Board of Directors.
  • A corporate giving campaign that specifically recognizes diverse and underrepresented organizations and their accomplishments in our communities.
  • Educational opportunities for our employee-owners to create a culture of awareness and behavior around diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and in our lives.
  • A recruiting strategy that is deliberate and intentional to hire qualified and talented candidates from more diverse backgrounds.
  • Analyzing compensation across the company to ensure pay equity.
  • Reviewing our policies and procedures through an inclusionary lens and making deliberate changes that set the stage for a successful and diverse workplace.
  • Embracing and developing relationships with MBE (Minority Business Enterprise) and DBE (Disadvantaged Business Enterprise) firms to strengthen our project teams and bring perspective to our actions.
  • Reinforcing diversity and inclusion as a long-term company-wide commitment by incorporating actions directly into our strategic plan.

At PC, “Building Stronger, Together” is about culture. It is our commitment and it is our promise. We welcome, encourage and celebrate a diverse and inclusive workforce. It will make us a better company, help us make better decisions and lead our employee owners to bring their best selves every day.

Like so many, I’ve spent the last month trying to process the devastating chaos sweeping our nation, from the tragedy and death of George Floyd in Minneapolis to the horrors we continue to see. We must do better – for our fellow employee-owners, for our families, for our community and for future generations. We need to bring outside perspectives to our work and never presume to know what someone else’s marginalization feels like.

I won’t pretend that I understand all of the issues, nor the root of this pain – that would be impossible and disingenuous. What I can say is that I see it and I feel it. I am called to do better for myself, my family and our company because Black Lives Matter. My sadness has spurred me to want to learn, research, understand and then act.

To start, I have stepped on to chair the Diversity and Inclusion Committee and will dig into their work. I know we’ve made some progress, but we need to do more. PC has also signed the Culture of CARE pledge through the AGC of America. This pledge honors our united responsibility, as contractors, to ensure everyone has the same opportunities to advance, prosper and succeed, and that our industry is diverse, safe, welcoming, and inclusive for all. These are small steps toward bigger leaps.

What is happening all around us runs deep. It is an issue our world has faced for centuries. Our industry has long struggled to recruit and support minorities and women at all levels. This lack of representation – lack of diversity – holds us back from realizing our full potential. We need to step beyond our efforts to eliminate discrimination and encourage greater diversity at all levels by exploring more concrete policies and practices to demonstrate to every employee-owner, no matter their role or location at PC, that they are valued, respected and unequivocally equal.

PC’s culture is built around BUILDING STRONGER, TOGETHER. Doesn’t that mean we should also stand up for one another? Say something when we see someone being hurt? Do the right thing even when it’s hard? I believe it does.

We will do better. We will be better.

ReceptionWhat a great evening! On behalf of the entire PC Construction team, we are grateful for the support we continually receive from our clients and our design partners – and they came out in force last night to celebrate the start of summer with the PC Construction team at Hotel Vermont in downtown Burlington.

We were joined by over 200 of our New England partners with whom we’ve built numerous projects throughout Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and upstate New York. The games, laughter and reminiscing were intermingled with some trivia. A few of the facts that sparked competition among the group included:

  • PC Construction places approximately 9,000 tons of steel on our projects annually which equals the weight of a 500-foot-long navy destroyer warship.
  • PC Construction pours about 50,000 cubic yards of concrete per year, the equivalent to building a wall 10 feet tall, 12 inches thick and 25 miles long.
  • PC Construction recently installed the largest geothermal well field in the state of Vermont at the Spruce Peak Village Center project in Stowe, Vermont.

Again, a heartfelt THANK YOU from PC Construction and cheers to many more years of partnership!
