Construction SiteEarlier this month PC received the exciting news that we were selected by ENR as the 2022 Southeast Contractor of the Year. ENR selected PC due to our growing revenues, perseverance through the pandemic, incredible work in the region, and for our commitment to the community. More than 120 firms in Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Puerto Rico were considered for the award.

Factored into this recognition was also PC’s completion of the complex $321 million Atlanta Water Supply Program project – which won seven regional, national and global awards – and the $93 million Richland Creek Water Supply Program in Dallas, Georgia, which won the 2022 AGC Construction Risk Partners Build America Award.

“We’re excited to be a part of the major growth and modernization that’s happening across the country and are proud to contribute to the innovative infrastructure projects that are helping make that growth more sustainable,” said President / CEO Jay Fayette. “We thank ENR Southeast for this honor and recognition.”

For us, this accomplishment is a feather in the cap (er, hard hat) of an exceptional year. We are so proud of our innovative work spanning from Maine to Florida, and recognition such as this makes it all a bit more real.

Last week, PC Project Manager Anne Minor was honored by the Associated General Contractors of Vermont (AGC/VT) with a Rising Stars Award. The award, which recognizes exceptional leadership in the construction profession, was focused on the State’s top women in the industry.

Said Minor: I love seeing the fruits of my labor at the end of every day and most of all I love the teamwork. It is incredible what we can do when we put our minds together to build structures that will stand for decades for our families and grandchildren to enjoy.”

AGC/VT also announced the winners of their annual Best Builders Award, which included PC’s Green Mountain Power Middlesex Dam Spillway Rock Anchor Stabilization and Crest Concrete Resurfacing project in Middlesex, Vermont. The award was presented in the Heavy Industrial Renovation category for outstanding quality of work and effort.

The project included the installation of 19 separate vertical rock anchors along the crest of the 283-foot-long, 50-foot-high dam, resurfacing of the concrete along the crest, and an additional 2,000 square feet of concrete replacement along the downstream face of the dam. The work required careful planning and extensive safety precautions to eliminate impacts to both worker safety and GMP’s operations. The work was completed on time and budget and the dam’s operations remained uninterrupted throughout the duration of construction. PC successfully completed 13,100 worker hours without incident or recordable injury for this extremely high-risk work.

Said PC Vice President Eve Norris: “This project was incredibly challenging in nature and scope. Our Special Projects team executed the work safely and efficiently to meet all of the owner’s goals while maintaining their critical operations. And for Anne to receive this recognition from AGC is just another testament to her incredible work ethic and her love of all things construction. I couldn’t be more proud of Anne and our entire PC team for these accomplishments.”

Thank you to AGC/VT for this recognition!

In honor of Women Build 2021, I spent the day alongside some of the amazing women at PC Construction helping build a home for Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity. PC’s team of eight partnered with a group of regular volunteers who are all retired from the construction industry. We were quickly off and running, helping install blocking for cabinetry, decking the front porch, applying zip sheeting and building fly rafters. It was empowering to work alongside this seasoned crew and I am extremely proud of all we accomplished in one day. It is truly rewarding to know that we helped make a local family’s dreams come true.

Last night PC was honored by the Associated General Contractors of Vermont with a Best Builders Award for the University of Vermont STEM Complex project in Burlington, Vermont. The award was presented in the Academia, New Construction category for outstanding quality of work and effort.

This four-year construction project involved the demolition of two buildings and the construction of two new STEM buildings totaling nearly 185,000 square feet. The project took place in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Demolition of Angell Lecture Hall and construction of Discovery Hall, an 111,000-square-foot state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratory building with an 86-foot-long overhead bridge connecting to UVM’s engineering building.
  • Phase 2: Demolition of the five-story, 165,000-square-foot Cook Physical Science Building just 30 feet from the newly constructed Discovery Hall.
  • Phase 3: Construction of Innovation Hall, a 73,000-square-foot modern classroom and office building with a five-story connector to Discovery Hall.

The project included a highly technical scope of work and a large-scale construction project taking place in the center of a busy university campus. As the flagship new facility for the University, the project included 34 teaching and research laboratories, advanced physics laboratories, clean room spaces all connected with intricate architectural details. Extensive coordination was required to enable state-of-the-art architectural, structural and MEP elements to be procured and constructed successfully.

The STEM Complex is the largest construction project the University has undertaken and is key to addressing the acute need for STEM education and industry in the State of Vermont.

Treatment Plant Facilities Last week, the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) commissioned the first major component of the DC Clean Rivers Program ahead of the deadline outlined by the consent decree. Working with a team of engineers and contractors, a seven-mile-long tunnel segment and a new 225 mgd wet weather treatment facility was put into service. The two components will work together to reduce combined sewer overflows by more than 80 percent.

The design-build joint venture of PC Construction and CDM Smith designed and constructed the new wet weather treatment facility, which receives the overflow stored and transmitted through the tunnel. The facility is designed to treat 225 million gallons of incoming combined sewer overflow, eliminating potential untreated overflow into the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and Rock Creek.

The construction of the wet weather treatment facility included a 500-mgd tunnel dewatering pump station with five 83-mgd pumps and a 225-mgd enhanced clarification facility utilizing a ballasted, high-rate clarification process to treat the water, providing disinfection before discharge into the Potomac River.

“This project is a crucial component of DC Water’s wet weather plan,” said Kevin McCarthy, president and CEO of PC Construction. “We are proud to contribute to the incredible effort, helping DC Water achieve their consent decree deadline and improve the health of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and associated waterways.”

DC Water will continue their efforts with the mining of the next tunnel segment. Upon completion in 2023, the entire tunnel system will capture 98 percent of sewage overflows into the Anacostia and provide more flooding relief for residents who were served by an undersized sewer for decades.

Office Building at DuskPC Construction is proud to announce the Waterbury State Office Complex project was honored with a 2017 Public Works Project of the Year award in the category of Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair over $75 million. The project was recognized by the American Public Works Association (APWA) on Monday at their annual conference in Orlando, Florida.

The APWA Public Works Projects of the Year awards are presented annually to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects, recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, contractor, consultant and their cooperative achievements.

When Tropical Storm Irene swept through Vermont in 2011, it flooded nearly every river and stream in the state. The Village of Waterbury was hard hit including the Waterbury State Office Complex, located on the banks of the Winooski River. The entire state was ravaged and more than 1,500 state employees were displaced to other locations around Vermont.

This project began two years later in August 2013 with the deconstruction of 21 flood-prone buildings to make room for a new 86,000-square-foot two-story steel-framed office building. Buildings were constructed six inches above the 500-year flood mark and specialized foundations were used to protect against future flooding. The complex is significantly more efficient with a new central plant and maintenance facility housing two wood-fired biomass boilers using 25% less energy. More than 115,000 square feet and 13 historic buildings were restored to their original grandeur and 94% of the 48,000 tons of demolished materials were recycled or diverted from landfills.

The success of the project can be attributed to the successful collaboration between all parties including Freeman French Freeman Architects, the State of Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services, all the subcontractors and PC Construction. This collaboration epitomizes the “We are Vermont Strong” phrase that became the hallmark of Vermont’s resiliency after Hurricane Irene.

Today, members of PC Construction’s Atlanta team presented three local non-profits with a total of $15,000 as part of our “PC Gives Back” crowd-sourced donations contest. Ten Atlanta-based organizations competed for the chance to win the $10,000 top prize.

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the Chattahoochee River, was the top vote-getter with approximately 23% of the nearly 6,000 votes cast by supporters of all of the organizations. PC Construction’s Bob Huie and Dan Nawrocki joined the top three organizations earlier today at the CRK office to present the donations.

“We are proud to support Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and their work to protect the river, its lakes and tributaries for the people, fish and wildlife that depend on them,” said Nawrocki. “Chattahoochee Riverkeeper uses advocacy, education, research, and more to protect and preserve the river and its watershed, which provides a drinking water source for nearly four million people.”

Juliet Cohen, executive director of CRK, said the non-profit will make quick use of the $10,000 gift by providing 400 underserved children from elementary through high school with the opportunity to spend time on the river learning about water quality and lake ecology through their Floating Classroom programs.

Other winners include CHRIS 180 (formerly CHRIS Kids), an organization formed to heal children, strengthen families and build community through mental health counseling, training, safe housing and real-world skill building. CHRIS 180 received the second highest number of votes and a $3,000 gift. Cool Girls, which provides motivation, encouragement and reinforcement to help girls make smart choices and deter risky behaviors, while giving guidance for positive transformation, came in third for a $2,000 donation.

The race was close right to the end and we certainly want to commend the important contributions made by the other nonprofits who participated in this event, including Atlanta Children’s Shelter, Camp Kudzu, Families First, Georgia Center for Child Advocacy, Nicholas House, PATH Foundation, and Senior Connections. Thank you for all you do in the Atlanta community!

Last night, PC Construction proudly accepted one of the Associated General Contractors of America’s highest honors – an Alliant Build America Award in the construction management renovation category – for the Waterbury State Office Complex Redevelopment project. The award was presented at AGC’s 98th Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada and the PC Construction team was on hand to celebrate with the other honorees.

Completed last year, the $100 million redevelopment project, which is the largest capital project ever undertaken by the State of Vermont, was a critical step in revitalizing the Town of Waterbury after the destruction caused by Tropical Storm Irene. Over 1,500 state workers were displaced at the Complex following the flood, leaving them scattered around Vermont.

The work included a new 86,000-square-foot office building, a new 20,000-square-foot central plant and maintenance facility, and new site infrastructure as well as the historic renovation of the original 13 core buildings comprising 115,000-square-feet. Buildings were constructed six inches above the 500-year flood mark and specialized foundations were used to protect against future flooding. The complex is significantly more efficient with a new central plant and maintenance facility housing two wood-fired biomass boilers using 25 percent less energy.

“As was the case in many parts of the state after tropical storm Irene, the damage at the Waterbury State Office Complex was massive and the redevelopment was a complex, multi-step process that required dedication, ingenuity and collaboration across government and in conjunction with Vermont businesses, like PC Construction,” said Vermont Governor Phil Scott. “Congratulations PC Construction; this award is well-deserved. We are forever grateful to you and so many others who stepped up and answered the call to serve our state in the wake of devastation across our region.”

The project, which was completed in collaboration with design partner Freeman French Freeman and a network of dedicated subcontractors, was also recognized by Engineering News-Record (ENR) with a New England Merit Award and by the Associated General Contractors of Vermont with a Best Builders Award.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this project such an outstanding success for the State of Vermont and the Town of Waterbury!
