We officially closed down our month-long employee ownership celebration with great success. Throughout the month of October, we banded together with a team of Vermont employee-owned companies to give back to the community. The 20-company team set a big goal to raise $20,000 for the Vermont Foodbank and 4,000 pounds of food for local food shelves.

PC Construction started off out of the gate strong with a racecar theme. We watched non-perishables such as boxes of pasta and cans of soup transform into racecars in our lobby. Our efforts paid off! Today we delivered 560 pounds of food to the new food shelf in South Burlington, Vermont, and watched our online donations creep up over $2,800.

Add this to the efforts of the 19 other Vermont employee-owned companies and we achieved outstanding results! While the tally is still out on the total weight of food donated, we crushed our online fundraising goal with over $30,000 raised!

Thank you to everyone who helped us reach this goal!

A Zero Punchlist Mentality /news/a-zero-punchlist-mentality/ Wed, 14 Aug 2019 15:54:13 +0000 https://www.pcconstruction.com/blog/?p=6171 The concept behind Zero Punchlist is simple. The concept behind Zero Punchlist is simple. All potential defects should be corrected immediately, the root cause identified, and steps taken to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen again. Simple as it may be, it can be hard to change behaviors – “keep going, we’ll fix it later”. That’s why I was so heartened by a simple exchange that took place on one of our projects in Maine.

I was walking the site with Grit Richards, PC project superintendent, when we were approached by one of our trade partners. The trade partner pointed out that the pieces of tape the painters were using to cover the electrical outlets were too large. When he pulled one off, it damaged the drywall, and to fix the issue would require a new skim coat, sanding and paint. He suggested that the issue be fixed now by talking to the painters so we could prevent the issue from reoccurring in the future. Grit enthusiastically responded and was clearly pleased that the entire team would be able to learn from this and improve processes as a result.

What was really nothing more than a simple exchange yielded significant results. If these discussions happened on every job whenever there was a defect or a kink in the process, think of all the rework and waste that would be eliminated. This simplicity goes back to the very fundamentals of Lean and the desire to continuously improve.

Being a 100% employee-owned company is pretty cool. Being surrounded by an amazing group of other Vermont employee-owned companies that love to do good in the community is even better. When it came time to celebrate Employee Ownership Month, the Employee Owners of Vermont decided to come together and truly make a difference. Our target – the Vermont Food Bank.

Throughout the course of a month, the Employee Owners of Vermont raised a total of $17,800, making it the Food Bank’s largest online campaign. Additionally, the group collected over 3,000 pounds of food that was donated directly to their local food shelves.

“We are blown away by the success of the Employee Owners of Vermont’s fundraising efforts,” says Vermont Foodbank CEO, John Sayles. “The $17,800 that they raised will provide nearly 30,000 meals to families, kids, older adults, and individuals in Vermont struggling with hunger. These efforts will truly change lives. A wholehearted thank you to all of the Employee Owners of Vermont businesses who stepped up to make this possible!”

Thank you to all of our amazing employee-owned counterparts for your efforts:

Stay tuned for our next adventure!
