Construction Underway for Vermont Wastewater Facility Upgrades

Construction has formally kicked off at three of Burlington, Vermont鈥檚 wastewater treatment facilities. The project, constructed by PC Construction, in partnership with engineer Wright-Pierce, includes upgrades to the headworks facilities at the Main WWTF, North WWTF and East WWTF.

Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak was joined by Vermont Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Julie Moore, officials from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, Department of Public Works Director Chapin Spencer, Water Resources Division Director Megan Moir, Lake Champlain Committee Executive Director Jenny Patterson, PC Construction President / CEO Matt Cooke and Water Resources staff to celebrate a ceremonial groundbreaking for this once-in-a-generation upgrade to the city鈥檚 wastewater facilities.

The project, which began initial construction activities earlier this month, is the beginning of a phased, multi-year upgrade and modernization effort. This phase will improve screening and grit removal infrastructure at all three facilities to help reduce downstream pollution, protect infrastructure and support future upgrades.

鈥淭aken collectively, these projects will reduce overflow pollution to Lake Champlain, refurbish or replace old infrastructure, and secure wastewater treatment capacity 鈥?improvements which will support desperately-needed new housing and a thriving business community,” said Vermont Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Julie Moore.

Construction of this phase will wrap up late next summer.

Project Update: Agency of Transportation District 8 Garage

Construction is well underway on the State of Vermont Agency of Transportation鈥檚 new garage and salt shed in Swanton. PC Construction鈥檚 Special Projects team recently finished structural steel erection and detailing for the 15,000-square-foot, 11-bay maintenance garage. Nearly a dozen additional scopes will be self-performed throughout construction, with an associated value of $1.3 million of the overall $9.4 million project.

Located on a 20-acre site, the new garage with second story mezzanine will house plow trucks and other equipment and be accompanied by a new 10,000-square-foot, two-bay salt shed with brine mixing area and other associated facilities. The project includes extensive site preparations and utilities, including a 4,000-linear-foot water line, new electrical service, stormwater infrastructure and temporary roadways.

With structural steel complete, PC’s Special Projects team is underway with framing and siding activities. Construction will continue through the rest of this year with work wrapping up in early 2025. Stay tuned for updates on this important project for the Agency of Transportation!

New Emergency Department Open to Vermont Patients

The first phase of Southwestern Vermont Medical Center鈥檚 most ambitious construction project in the last 40 years is now open and receiving patients. Upon completion, the new Kendall Emergency Department will include a 14,000-square-foot addition and 11,000 square feet of renovations to the existing emergency department. The addition and select renovations were completed as part of the first phase, providing an expanded and modernized setting for the medical center to care for the current and emerging needs of their patient population. The remaining renovation work associated with the final two phases is underway with opening scheduled by fall of 2024.

In total, the facility houses two new trauma rooms, a behavioral health suite with five psychiatric holding rooms, 16 new and renovated patient rooms, support spaces and registration areas in addition to the Richard and Pamela Ader Foundation Lobby and the Marro Caf茅. Exterior enhancements include a new main entrance with canopies and a new two-story atrium.
