Anne Minior, NAWIC Charter Champion AwardLast week, I had the incredible honor of receiving the Charter Champion Award at the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) National Conference in Boston. This recognition is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in sponsoring, successfully chartering, and supporting a new NAWIC chapter through its first year. It celebrates the hard work, dedication, and vision required to lay a strong foundation for a thriving chapter鈥攁nd I鈥檓 deeply humbled to be among this year鈥檚 recipients.

One of the most special parts of this award is the聽custom grey blazer聽that comes with it鈥攁 symbol of leadership and commitment to NAWIC鈥檚 mission. I鈥檝e already had the chance to put it to good use at a recent聽AGCVT event, where I proudly represented NAWIC and had the honor of engaging with聽Vermont Governor Phil Scott. It was a meaningful moment to showcase our chapter鈥檚 impact and the importance of supporting women in construction at the state level.

The conference itself was nothing short of inspiring. This was my second year attending this conference and both times left with a refreshed passion for our work. Surrounded by passionate, driven women from across the country, I felt the power of our collective commitment to progress. The energy in the room was electric as we shared stories, challenges, and victories. Standing on stage to accept the award was a moment I鈥檒l never forget鈥攏ot just for the personal significance, but for what it represents: the strength and unity of women in construction.

Looking ahead, I鈥檓 equally thrilled to share that I鈥檒l be stepping into the role of聽President of the NAWIC Vermont Chapter聽this fall. I鈥檓 eager to continue advocating for our members, fostering growth, and championing initiatives that open doors for women in our field.

To everyone who has supported me on this journey鈥攖hank you. Your encouragement fuels my passion and strengthens our mission. Here鈥檚 to building a future where every woman in construction feels empowered, supported, and celebrated.

It has been over a month since our Construction Safety Week celebration, and we continue to feel the positive effects from the weeklong safety focus. Every member of our project team embraced the opportunity to participate in activities and important lessons to strengthen our sitewide safety culture. Each day brought a new theme, emphasizing the importance of working safely together and looking out for one another.

  • Monday, Tacos and Teamwork: We kicked off the week with a taco feast that had everyone smiling. We discussed the importance of teamwork in maintaining a safe work environment. Just like the perfect taco, every ingredient (or team member) plays a crucial role in creating something great. Remember, working together makes us stronger and safer!
  • Tuesday, Boot Truck and Safety Gear: Tuesday featured the popular boot truck from Saf-Gard, where employees were fitted for new safety boots. We focused our discussions on the importance of proper safety gear. Wearing the right equipment not only protects us but also shows that we care about each other’s well-being.
  • Wednesday, Trivia and Knowledge Sharing: Midweek brought a fun trivia contest, testing our knowledge on various safety topics. The trivia highlighted how staying informed and sharing knowledge can prevent accidents and promote a safer workplace. It’s not just about knowing the rules; it’s about applying them and helping others understand them too.
  • Thursday, Fire Extinguisher Demo: Thursday’s fire extinguisher demonstration was both educational and engaging. We learned how to properly use fire extinguishers and the importance of being prepared for emergencies. This day reminded us that safety is everyone’s responsibility, and being prepared can make all the difference in a crisis.
  • Friday, Pizza and Appreciation: We wrapped up the week with a pizza party, celebrating our collective efforts to stay safe. We recognized the team鈥檚 hard work and dedication to maintaining a safe workplace. It’s about looking out for each other and appreciating the efforts that keep us all safe.

Looking back, I realize how important Construction Safety Week was for our team. It brought us all together to share stories, lessons learned and ideas for improvement. It was also a great reminder that safety is a shared responsibility. By working together, staying informed, and looking out for one another, we create a safer and more supportive work environment. Now, we continue to prioritize safety every day, ensuring that we all go home safe and sound.

PC Construction team at the NAWIC Vermont Chartering event. The construction industry is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about building dreams, shaping communities and breaking barriers. On December 5, in a celebration of women achievements and contributions in construction, the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) officially chartered the Vermont chapter. The chartering event is a testament to our powerful and hardworking Vermont construction women who volunteered many hours to get the chapter off the ground over the past year. NAWIC Vermont aims to create a supportive community where women in construction can educate, develop, connect and thrive.

The chartering event was more than just a celebration; it’s a bold statement about the future of the construction industry. By fostering diversity, promoting inclusion and recognizing the achievements of women in construction, NAWIC is contributing to the creation of a more equitable and vibrant industry. As we reflect on this historic occasion for Vermont, let us collectively embrace the opportunities ahead and build a future where everyone, regardless of gender, can contribute to and benefit from the ever-evolving landscape of construction.

We are proud to have collaborated between other local women in construction to bring this event to fruition, with a special shout-out to ReArch, GW Savage and Hoyle Tanner. We are also excited to announce that two members of the PC team have also been voted onto NAWIC Vermont鈥檚 board of directors 鈥?Karen Deutscher as director and myself as treasurer. The first official chapter meeting will be held January 9, 2024. All prospective members are welcome 鈥?please reach out to Karen or me for additional details!

The PC team is well underway with construction for Southwestern Vermont Health Care鈥檚 (SVHC) emergency department modernization project in Bennington, Vermont. On November 18, the former Lodge was demolished to make room for the reconfigured entryway, marking an instrumental moment for the hospital鈥檚 Vision 2020 Plan.

The project will modernize the emergency department and expand the presence of teleEmergency service in coordination with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health. Designed by Lavallee Brensinger, work includes an addition and renovation to include new trauma rooms, a behavioral health suite, exam rooms, support spaces, and waiting and registration areas. The exterior will receive a revised main entrance and canopies, including a new two-story atrium.

The new facility will incorporate many features critical to modern health care space. Touch-free motion-activated doors and walls will provide privacy and enhanced infection prevention. The entire department will be equipped with negative pressure to aid in the control of air-borne illness. And the addition of high-acuity, low-acuity, and collaborative care areas are expected to reduce wait times and improve the patient and provider experience.

What a whirlwind! The Omni Mount Washington Resort Guestroom Addition project in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, is in the final stages of completion after an exciting 18 months. This project features the construction of a new 60,000-square-foot, four-story addition to the presidential wing of the iconic hotel nestled at the base of Mount Washington. The addition offers 69 luxury rooms, a club lounge, a courtyard spa garden and poolside bar. Renovations of the existing conference center kitchen and the rooftop terrace complete the features offered by the new space. Originally opened in 1902, and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986, the project鈥檚 design and construction preserved the grand hotel鈥檚 history and grandeur. Just seven months into the project, COVID-19 descended upon the U.S., bringing an entirely new set of challenges I have never encountered in my career. Throw in extreme winter conditions, heavy winds, and a two-hour-minimum travel distance for nearly all trade partners, and this project truly required a full team effort. With a team commitment to Lean construction methods from day one, we successfully achieved all project milestones despite delays due to extenuating circumstances. Coupled with the team鈥檚 tenacity and integrity, the project was a success. More than half of the guestrooms were turned over to the hotel a week ahead of schedule, allowing the first room to be occupied on December 26. The final Certificate of Occupancy for the remaining guestrooms and public spaces was granted on January 28. The 鈥楾eam鈥?extends well beyond PC. From the owner to the architect, engineers and subcontractors, this project embraced a collaborative atmosphere with shared goals 鈥?and the results were worth every bit of effort. The PC team was pleased to celebrate with the Omni team last week during a day of skiing and lunch at the Bretton Woods Ski Resort. Blue skies, great company and laughter brought this exceptional project to an end and demonstrates that we really do 鈥榖uild stronger, together鈥?
